How to use it
- Enter the number of steps.
- Enter the step width, rise (height) and run (tread depth).
- Add the depth of any top landing.
The formula
Step i volume = width × run × (rise × i)
Total = sum of all steps + width × landing depth × total rise
Worked example
| Number of steps | 3 |
| Step width | 48 in |
| Rise (height of each step) | 7 in |
| Run (depth of each tread) | 11 in |
| Top platform depth | 0 in |
| Waste / spillage allowance | 10 % |
Result
| Concrete needed | 0.52 cubic yards |
| Cubic feet | 14.1 ft³ |
| Cubic meters | 0.4 m³ |
| 80 lb bags | 24 bags |
| 60 lb bags | 32 bags |
| Approx. weight | 1.1 tons |
| Total rise | 21 in |
| Total run | 33 in |
Tips before you order
- Residential codes usually limit risers to 7¾ in and require treads of at least 10 in.
- Fill the core of large steps with compacted gravel or broken concrete to save material — then reduce the volume accordingly.
Questions
How much concrete for 3 steps?
Three steps 4 ft wide with 7 in risers and 11 in treads need about 12.8 ft³ (0.48 yd³) without waste.
