How to use it
- Enter the length and width.
- Enter the compacted thickness.
- Leave density at 145 lb/ft³ unless your plant gives a different figure.
The formula
Tons = length × width × thickness × density ÷ 2,000
Worked example
| Length | 50 ft |
| Width | 12 ft |
| Compacted thickness | 3 in |
| Asphalt density | 145 lb/ft³ |
| State (for price) | U.S. average |
| Extra for settling / compaction | 5 % |
Result
| Asphalt needed | 11.4 tons |
| Volume | 5.83 yd³ |
| Area | 600 ft² |
| Hot-mix material cost | $1,142–$2,284 |
Tips before you order
- Residential driveways usually get 2–3 in of asphalt over 6–8 in of compacted base.
- Asphalt is placed hot; plan the job for a dry day above about 50 °F.
